China sues Canada over steel and aluminum tariffs at the WTO
According to the website of the Ministry of Commerce, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce answered questions from reporters on September 6th regarding China’s lawsuit against Canada for taxation measures on electric vehicles, steel and aluminum products, and aluminum profiles at the World Trade Organization.
Reporter’s question: It is reported that China has filed a lawsuit at the World Trade Organization regarding Canada’s taxation measures on electric vehicles and steel and aluminum products. Could you please introduce the specific situation?
Spokesperson’s response: On September 6th, China submitted a consultation request to Canada at the World Trade Organization regarding the imposition of additional taxes on Canadian electric vehicles and steel and aluminum products.
Canada disregards WTO rules and violates its commitments in the WTO. It intends to impose additional taxes of 100% and 25% on Chinese electric vehicles and steel and aluminum products respectively, which is a typical unilateralism and trade protectionism practice. It seriously damages the rules based multilateral trading system and disrupts the global supply chain of industries such as electric vehicles, steel and aluminum, and aluminum profiles. China firmly opposes this.
China is a staunch supporter and important contributor to the multilateral trading system, and we urge Canada to abide by WTO rules and immediately correct its erroneous practices.
